/ SWITCHING TO US

How to cancel your website subscription with another company

After your new site is live with us, you’ll want to cancel your old website service so you’re not paying twice. The steps are simple — but the timing and one specific gotcha matter.

Do these two things first

Don’t cancel until (1) your new site is live with us, and (2) your domain is pointed to it and confirmed working. Cancelling too early can take your site — and sometimes your email — offline.

The big one: don’t cancel your domain

If you bought your domain through the same company that hosts your site (common with GoDaddy), cancel only the website/hosting plan — not the domain registration. Or transfer the domain to us first. Losing the domain is the one mistake that’s genuinely painful to undo.

The general steps (any provider)

  1. 1Log into your current provider’s account.
  2. 2Go to Account, Billing, or Subscriptions.
  3. 3Find the website or hosting plan (not the domain).
  4. 4Cancel it, or turn off auto-renew so it lapses at the end of the term you’ve already paid for.
  5. 5Save a screenshot of the cancellation confirmation for your records.

Quick notes by provider

  • GoDaddy: Account Settings → My Products (or Subscriptions) → cancel the “Websites + Marketing” or hosting plan. Keep the domain if it’s registered there — cancel only the site plan, or transfer the domain to us first.
  • Wix: Account → Subscriptions → cancel the Premium plan. Your Wix site drops to the free/unpublished tier, which is fine once you’ve moved.
  • Squarespace: Account → Billing → Subscriptions → cancel the website subscription.

Already paid for the year?

Turn off auto-renew instead of cancelling immediately — you keep the service until the term ends (most providers don’t refund mid-term), and it simply won’t renew.

We’ll tell you when it’s safe

You don’t have to figure out the timing alone. Once your new site is live and the domain is pointed, we’ll give you the green light and walk you through cancelling — so you never risk downtime.

We handle all of this for you.

Switching to Krause Web Design means we point your domain, preserve your email, and tell you exactly when it’s safe to cancel your old plan. You don’t touch a setting.
